Willie wrote a Position Paper and a Draft Resolution

I wrote a Position Paper and a Draft Resolution regarding the African Food crisis. MUN students can read my papers and see how I have written them. I hope they will help you understand what should be included in your papers.

Here is my position paper. Perhaps students want to read this in order to gain ideas for their own papers.
Position Paper
Committee: ECOSOC
Issue: The Food Crisis in Africa
Country: Angola (Willie McGuire)

The United Nations must work to uphold basic human rights for all people. Among these rights is a standard of well-being that includes food, clothing, housing, and medical care. Food and shelter are basic needs for human beings. The continent of Africa is home to many of the world's poorest countries, and the current food crisis threatens people every day. 2011 saw the worst African drought in over 60 years. Climate change is speeding up the desertification of land. Many other factors add to the food shortage, including poor use of water and resources, a lack of organization, social instability, wars, and political corruption. While there is no simple answer to correcting all these problems, the delegate of Angola believes that careful planning, peace-making, and cooperation can create a solid foundation for building a sustainable and abundant culture of food production in Africa.
Angola is located in the southwest part of central Africa, on the Atlantic coast. The nation became an independent republic in 1975, after a civil war. Prior to that time, the country had been considered a colony of Portugal for about 500 years. Although Angola is rich in mineral resources and agricultural commodities, many of our citizens still suffer from poverty, hunger, and disease. Like some other countries in Africa, Angola's famine is largely due to the fact that our society is not peaceful. Our politicians have repeatedly abused their power and authority, our people are divided and often at war with one another, and our economic policies are not fair to the average worker. Though we produce and export a lot of food, our agricultural policies seem to be aimed at short-term economic gain rather than food production and long-term sustainability, and many of our people still suffer from hunger.
There are many groups that work to prevent hunger in Africa, and yet the problem remains. Angola's representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), Mamoudou Diallo, made public statements about the food crisis on World Food Day, October 16. He said that ending hunger and poverty are primary goals of the Angolan government, and that supporting cooperative efforts will be important for increasing the food supply. Angola is ready and willing to help solve this problem in our country and in the rest of Africa.
The FAO recently published an article on the importance of indigenous and aboriginal cultures. The article explained that traditional farming, herding, and hunting practices of indigenous cultures tend to protect biodiversity and forests. We ought to learn from these people. Environmentalists from Angola have criticized deforestation as a threat to the environment as well as a threat to traditional cultures. While large-scale commercial farming often thrives on deforestation, it seems that sustainable food production and culture demands the diversity of forests and the ability of herders to move and roam with their crops.
To solve the problem of hunger in Africa, many actions must be initiated. It is necessary to support the cooperation of NGOs and environmental groups that protect against desertification and deforestation. These groups must work hand-in-hand with agricultural support groups who can educate farmers on resource management and help provide public spaces where livestock can move freely, without destroying the soil. Assistance in the form of food donations, access to water, seeds, and money must also be given to the countries in need, but we must do so in a way that doesn't harm the local economies; perhaps giving stamps or tickets to responsible farmers which they can exchange for seeds and farming supplies. These supplies can be paid for at a fair price through donations. Additionally, we must provide protection for indigenous cultures and learn about the sustainability of their ways.
The problem of the food crisis cannot be fixed from the top going downward. Indeed, we must work from the bottom and go up. The base of society must be peaceful and stable in order to build and organize an effective community. So, in resolving the African food crisis, the UN should focus not only on food, the environment, and agriculture, but also on social stability and peaceful relations. We should send in groups of diplomats to encourage social harmony, economic equality, and opportunities for improvement. We must encourage politicians to end corruption and stop the wars. We must work hard to end despair and violence in society, so that people are ready to cooperate and work towards long-term goals that can bring food to people now and in the future.

The Draft Resolution should be written as one continuous sentence. The clauses in the preamble should end with comma, and the operative clauses end with semi-colon; except for the final clause, which ends with a period. The words that introduce clauses in the preamble should be in italics, and the words that introduce operative clauses should be underlined.

Opening speech

As I rummaged through the photographs of HSINMUN, memories flew back to me. I still remember the moment when the teacher told me that Charlie from S201 asked me to be his partner, I was in total shock, because my English writing ability was so poor I was in doubt if I could ever finish this job or not. Still, I gave it a try. To my surprise, it was just right for my taste and I totally enjoyed the job even though the process was pretty hard.
I still remember when I started to do Topic 202. - Climate Refugees in the Light of Climate Refugee. I was so nervous that I mistook the order of  the essay with the opening speech, draft resolution and policy statement, instead of doing it in the proper order of fist telling the policy statement, then draft resolution and finally the opening speech. Time flew, the next moment I was boarding the High Speed Rail, arriving at the National Experimental High School (IBSH).I was again, shocked about the amount people and the enormous campus.I must admit that I was frightened when I first walked into the school, almost everyone who was going to attend MUN was speaking English! I mean not only chatting with others, but also talking on their cell phone or with their parents. They spoke so quickly I could barely make out the meaning of their sentences without listening a second time!
As the committee ECOSOC began, we were being called upon the podium to deliver our opening speech. I was mixed with tension when I approached the podium. After a while, I thought the delegates would be  really tough, but really, they were pretty friendly! I made a lot of friend from other places in Taiwan during the two day activities. After the conference, we were in the last activity of the HSINMUN: The World Trade Game (WTG). It’s a game where true friendship and teamwork can be seen from all over the place.

In conclusion, I would love to thank the teachers who helped me make essay and hand it out in time. I’d also like to thank my partner, Charlie, who gave me a chance to participate in the HSINMUN. I’d also like to say if it wasn’t the other participater of Deguang, I don’t believe I would be able to survive the conference until the end; thank you guys, for including such a troublemaker like me.HSINMUN really is an activity in MUN that is worth attending.I hope this won’t be my last time.

This is my third MUN conference experience, I felt even more nervous and confused than the Tainan MUN conference. All the delegates and observers are the elites from different cities. All administrative team and admins are the best of the best from IBSH and every of them have great English abilities. They speak and communicate in English the whole time. Though there were many mistakes, for example my name wasn't even on the conference handbook and didn't get a nameplate, but the procedure still went pretty well. During opening speech I concentrated on every delegates’ speeches and noticed that every of them spoken in perfect English accent and skills. It wasn’t really easy to find allies since every countries all cares about human rights and I was facing the dilemma of supporting which faction. As for me, I was the delegate of UNICEF, which is a none government organization and could only present but no voting rights. To me, delegates in Human Rights Council have mostly the same notions and concepts which is to solve humanitarian problems, so during debating time we could only find the tiny leak from our opposition faction. Most of the delegates are from American schools or Bilingual schools, they were willing to speak up and express their agreements and disagreements for their own country.

Their skills are formidable, it was hard to fight back and couldn't always understand what they are debating about. I only got a chance to speak and it was the time during opening speech, which was supporting and showing my agreement to my allies. Then other times during the conference I was actually dazing, because they didn’t call on us since we were only an organization and we sat at the very back of the row. Every time I wanted to raise my placard I hesitated, will it be humiliating if my question is not relevant to the topic or is my statement clear enough? I wasn’t able to turn in my Draft resolution on time, I finished it the day before the conference and sent it to our chair, and well….he said I did a great job! If I ever get a chance to attend another MUN, I will seize the chance speaking up and won’t wait until the last minute handing in my reports in. I was really glad to meet people that have great abilities and diplomatic skills, I learned a lot from them and gain more debating competence. I made a lot of friends from different schools, some of them said my English accent is pretty amazing, I felt quite proud about that. Three out of four resolution has passed, that’s a really great result to all of us. I don’t regret joining HSIN MUN IX because I have had an unforgettable and precious memory.

A marvelous journey to HSINMUN.

S201.Mimi Huang
As a senior in my school life, as a little girl in my mind, the memorable moments will always last. The sun shone ,the bird sang, I was ready for HSINMUN after two months of preparation. The excitement in my heart exploded without saying anything.
The most unforgettable things are the opening speech and the preparation at night, I still remember I read the speech with my sound trembling, I could not imagine I am more confident. At that time, I was extremely nervous and I almost couldn’t say anything. However, I defeated my enemy, the coward, with my courage in the bottom of my heart.
That is why I feel like participating in MUN because I know it will inspire myself as well as find my own way.
Through the HSINMUN, I also learned the importance of cooperation. I not only experienced ‘Unity is strength,’ but also a sense of belonging when I wrote papers and discussed the issue.
Besides, by writing papers, I could contact more international news and discover how different between a country and a country. The issue I got, workers’ safety in Bangladesh, really touched and shocked me.
It makes me understand the workers’ feelings more when I wrote papers.
It was so sorrowful….
All in all, it seems nothing after these two days, but the details in these two days life are so plentiful that I am still reluctant now. What I saw is students’ confidence to speak out; what I heard is others’ fluent speaking; and what I tasted is what I earned, confidence, bravery, happiness, inspiration, teamwork and friendship.
The tears fell down and then everything can be melted just because my own passion.
